Migration is an ambitious sample pack created by composers, musicians, and field recordists Susie Ibarra and Jake Landau. Ibarra and Landau have spent the last 3 years field recording and documenting bird migration paths that go from Sub-Saharan Africa, North through Morocco, Spain, France, up into Germany and as far north as the Baltic Sea.
Much of Ibarra and Landau’s field work in sound is focused on climate change, the natural world, and taking inspiration from diverse habitats, and birds on different continents. While researching these areas musically and sonically, they apply them to their instruments and compositions. Migration Sounds is one avenue of this practice.
Because of climate change, these migrations are becoming harder and harder for the bird species. Warming temperatures, less and less rainfall, and even the continuing expansion of the Sahara Desert are all affecting these migration patterns. Birds species such as the chaffinch, chiff chaff, corn bunting, nightingale, flamingo, great tit and many more are having to adapt. By recording the climate and the natural world, Jake and Susie are really recording a snapshot of what it is in this moment, and will not be again.
These incredible sounds within this pack were recorded on field during migration seasons in two UNESCO sites, Doñana National Park in Andalucía, Spain, and Jasmund National Park on Rügen Island, Germany, primarily using a DPA KIT-4060-OC-SMK. The field recordings were brought back to their home studio and many were left as untouched ambiances of migratory bird songs, but the duo also flipped the sounds into a variety of instruments and song starters with synths and drums created from the birdsongs, additional acoustic drum loops, and sensory percussion triggering the bird calls.
Take a skyward journey though these sounds from Africa, to Spain to the Baltic Sea and add some experimental movement and migration into your next production.
