The Transcribe! application is an assistant for people who want to work out a piece of music from a recording, in order to write it out, or play it themselves, or both. It doesn't do the transcribing for you, but it is essentially a specialised player program which is optimised for the purpose of transcription. It has many transcription-specific features not found on conventional music players.

It is also used by many people for play-along practice. It can change pitch and speed instantly, and you can store and recall any number of named loops. So you can practice in all keys, and you can speed up as well as slow down. There is some advice about play-along practice in Transcribe!'s help, under the heading "Various Topics".

And it is also used for speech transcription. With its support for foot pedals and its superior slowed-down sound quality, it is an excellent choice for this purpose. There is some advice about speech transcription in Transcribe!'s help, under the heading "Various Topics".

Conventional music players (whether hardware such as a CD player or an iPod, or software such as Windows Media Player or iTunes) are really designed for people who want to listen to whole tracks. They are very inconvenient for transcribing music as they are not designed for this purpose. If you copy the recording to your computer's hard disk as a sound file then you can use Transcribe! instead. Transcribe! offers many features aimed at making the transcription job smoother and easier, including the ability to slow down music without changing its pitch, to analyse chords and show you what notes are present, and the capability of adding markers and textual annotations so you can easily navigate around the track. Transcribe! also has a piano keyboard displayed on screen which you can click to play reference notes.

It is important to understand that Transcribe! does not attempt to do the whole job, processing an audio file and outputting musical notation or midi - this would be nice, but is a currently unsolved research problem. The spectrum analysis feature is very useful for working out those hard-to-hear chords, but you must still use your ear and brain to decide which of the peaks in the spectrum are notes being played, which are merely harmonics, and which are just the result of noise and broad-spectrum instruments such as drums. If you have never worked out even a simple piece of music by ear then Transcribe! will probably not help you (see How to Transcribe), but if you do sometimes work out recorded music by ear then Transcribe! can make the job a lot quicker and easier.

Depending on version, Transcribe! reads audio from many different types of audio file and audio CD. It also has a "Record" facility for recording from analog sources such as cassette or vinyl. It displays the audio waveform and allows you to scroll around, place markers for sections, measures and beats, and easily play or loop from any point.

Transcribe! can also display the video synchronised to the audio for many video files.

Loops and positions can be stored and recalled. There are many keyboard shortcuts and you can configure these as you like. You can configure Transcribe! to respond to pedals of various types so as to keep your hands free : start and stop playback with your feet!

There is extensive and readable help accessible from within the program.

The "spectrum" feature displays the strength of the various pitches in any chord or note you select, in the form of a graph - a wavy line over a piano keyboard graphic. The heights of the various peaks in the graph indicate the strength of the note above which the peak appears. This is not a magic bullet for analysing chords but it can be a very useful source of information.

Transcribe! will perform "note guessing" and "chord guessing" - that is, it will attempt to interpret the spectrum information for you, marking the notes being played on the piano keyboard, and attempting to name the chords (in standard form such as "Am", "E7#9", etc). Note guesses can be displayed in "piano roll" form, showing the guesses over time, aligned to the waveform view.

Transcribe! supports Automation (or Scripting). You can run Transcribe! automatically from commands in a file, perhaps to process a number of sound files, saving them at different altered speeds, or to instruct Transcribe! to play various sound files with various effects.

Transcribe! offers various audio processing effects (Slowdown, Pitch Change, EQ filtering etc) intended to help with transcribing. These effects all run in "real time". This means there is no pre-processing or other waiting, the processing is performed on-the-fly while playing and you can instantly hear the effect of changes to EQ etc. For instance if you press the half-speed button while playing then playback simply continues, at half speed.

Other-worldly so often results in resorting to all sorts of processing and trickery. For this release we have kept the trickery firmly out of the box to create a unique and playable take on the piano through "performance-design". What started out as a simple "palm muted" experiment (where a hand is placed on a string to mute it into a dull thudding piano sound). Into a week's worth of experimentation at Castlesound studios ultimately deconstructing and reconstructing the different resonating elements of a piano into a newly imagined instrument that is full of surprises.

Christian Henson the producer and performer of this library asked himself "what would a piano sound like if it was built by hand from scratch by Caractacus Potts?" (the inventor father from Ian Fleming's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang). What we have delivered also ultimately gives you control of those different elements (or partials as we call them) to set and forget your preferred timbral profile or indeed use to colour your performance and recordings in real-time.

The 5 key elements (of which you have total balance control) of the mystic piano are muted palms, a combination of plucked elements (depending on which dynamic layer is being triggered); fingers, rubber spoon, guitar plectrum. Isolated sustains including octave harmonics and damper-off. A rare fingered tremolando which builds up performance layers depending on dynamic layer.

Finally with clunking release triggers to accentuate that Caractacus Potts nature of the audio invention we have created. Everything is recorded with numerous round robins, dynamic layers and a fully dedicated set of samples for the pedal down resonance of the piano.

Crocus Soundware is pleased to present LIMINAL µ: BAMBOO WINDS, an affordable and compact library of intimately recorded bamboo transverse flute samples - playable using the full version of Kontakt 6.8+. The library's articulations are aleatoric, long and evolving, with the performer imparting character and movement into each sample. The flutes were mic'd to capture the air moving through the instrument, resulting in a warm and breathful sound.

The audio was recorded using large-diaphragm condenser microphones, placed within centimeters of the instruments. This allowed us to capture hyper-intimate details into the samples. The library is well suited to add unpredictability and creative imperfection. The LIMINAL range is not specifically intended for fast passages or soaring melodies. Instead, you may see the libraries as collections of naturalistic pads - offering humanistic details not found in something derived from a synthetic source.

The user-interface allows articulations to be layered, mixed and reversed. The 'crossfade gizmo' allows artful blending of sound layers with intuitive color-coded controls. LFO controls can also be enabled, allowing your DAW's tempo to dictate the modulation of an individual layer's volume. This opens the door for tempo-synced swells and unleashes even more creative possibilities for evolving texture. A new Randomize feature has been added, which allows you to instantly generate unique combinations of sample banks, layer and LFO states.

The lamp between the channel rows is the stage’s own meter, reading the harmonic product actually being generated. SAT takes the whole stage out without disturbing a setting.

Four curves, played together. Four complete drawable modulators in one window. Each layer has its own curve, its own clock, and its own target, which is simply what the curve drives: a filter, the volume, the pan, or one of eight effects. So a filter layer can feed a volume layer that feeds a reverb throw. Or play one layer at a time and crossfade between them. Four layers, each a complete modulator, reorderable by dragging their tabs. Fourteen destinations for the curve, adding saturation, distortion, width, bitcrush, chorus and phaser to the filters. apulSoft apUnmask is an audio plugin to amplify components of the audio that are psychoacoustically masked by other components.

To achieve this, apUnmask uses parts of the detector algorithm of the opus high-quality audio compression codec. Signal components that would get removed by compression are extracted. These can normally not be heard as they are masked by louder components in time and frequency. apUnmask enables amplifying and sculpting the masked content and adding it to the music.

To shape the frequencies of the extracted signal, it is fed through a linear phase graphical equalizer. It features a bezier curve smoothed frequency response without overshoot.

The result is a form of hyperrealistic audio. The process helps the listener to hear more aspects of the music at the same time. apUnmask can be used as a mastering effect or as an intelligent exciter for single instruments.

Improving Sound Using Audio Compression

Normally, lossy audio compression just removes things. Decades of research have lead to clever algorithms to detect what can be taken away without the listener noticing - all to save on data size. With apUnmask, you can use this research power to your benefit, extracting and amplifying those signals to help the listener's ears hear more.

Suggested Workflow

Insert apUnmask on the master track or an individual track to be enhanced.

Adjust the master gain until a reasonable amount of delta signal is visible.

Toggle the delta listen button to hear the "ghostly" sound what would be removed by the opus codec. This is what normally lives in the shadows of your music.

Experiment with the resolution knob to find the most interesting components.

Tweak the eq curve to extract and boost the good stuff.

Turn off delta listen and enjoy the result.
